Faeries Around the World

Did you know that faeries aren't always small, cute, and loveable?  In fact, most aren't.

Faeries in Scotland can have almost any shape or image but they are usually choose small human like appearance, Female faeries are very beautiful but can be spiteful and jealous. They can really be quite mean if provoked,. In the olden days in Scotland there were two groups of faeries: The Gude Faeries and the Wicked Wichts. Well, you can guess which group was a lot nicer to humans!

 

Now in Ireland, faeries can be quite mean if you get on the wrong side of them but they can also be kind and helpful. Most faeries live in bands or groups (both large ones and small ones) but some fae are solitary and prefer to be alone. The single ones dress much more simply in garments found in the forest, such as acorns and twigs.

 

In England, sometimes faeries are called Brownies as they dress in brown clothing. Brownies were thought to be attached to a home or a family. Changelings are also frequently talked about in English folklore. A changeling is a supernatural creature like a faery, left in place of a human baby.

 

 

Hobgoblins were solitary and were often quite mischievous!

 

We will continue throughout the month of January to gather information about faeries around the world.

 

 

 

 

 

Glowing Faeries in a Jar

So I've been seeing and reading all the faeries in a jar posts made with glow sticks and decided to do a bit of reading. Of course some have been photo shopped and your real experience may not be quite a Faery-lishus as they make it seem. But here's a picture of one someone actually made and it still seems pretty cute.  Also one post mentioned putting some white tulle in the jar for the glow stick liquid to cling to so it looks more "floaty" like.

I still think it would be fun to try and some of the results, while not as awesome as the photo shopped versions, are still pretty cute.  I wonder if you added some green and/or red food coloring you could get them to glow Christmas-t for Christmas faeries?

February Focus: For the Love of Faeries

For February I will be making a faery wish bag and a faery charm. It will work like this...

I will write a wish on a piece of paper and then I will draw a faery card. The card is to be the faery that can most help me with my wish...I will write the faery's name and a personal message to the faery on the wish sheet. Then tuck it into the samll bag.

Then I will create a faery charm for this faery...thinking about the faery, their likes, dislikes etc...I haven't decided yet if it will be on a piece of ribbon or in a small pouch but I am leaning toward the little bag...

I will do the wish of February first...and come back with more details....

Fairy Focus: Fairy Corner

I hope you enjoyed the fairy tidbits I found while wandering through books and fairy sites.

My next little focus is going to be on creating a fairy corner...and I have the perfect place for it...at the flea market I found a little white shelf unit that has a door on the front and four or five shelves inside. It's easy to leave the door open and display interesting objects and books inside. I haven't really "gotten it together" yet because with the holidays and such time was just not available. Currently it's setting empty in my bedroom.

As I passed it by the other day I thought...Fairies would love to reside inside this tall, narrow, old unit...and then as so often happens my mind jumped from one thing to another and I thought it would be the perfect place to display some of my fairy things...right now I just have a few items but I am always on the look out for cute little fairy trinkets and such. In addition on the bottom shelf I can stack my slowly growing collection of fairy books. It's a plus that the doors close because when little ones like my grandson come to visit I can just close up the little cabinet and protect the fairies and fairy things from little hands.

So I'm itching to create some little fairy displays and take some pics to share with you here at Fairy Dust and Fairy Kisses....

Fairy Focus: Fairy Tidbits

The Fairy Focus for this week is Fairy Tidbits...this week I will look for and collect fairy folklore, fairy quotes and little fairy tidbits to share with others through out the year. I received a fun little Irish Fairies book for Christmas so that will be a great starting place. I also need to get my fairy notebook back from a neighbor that borrowed it...that will be the perfect tool for organizing and storing the information I discover on my quest to understand the world of fairies.

Some things to look forward to in the coming weeks:

• Fairy Corner: I am creating a little fairy corner and will take some pictures to share with you!
• Fairy Gardens: Plans will start taking shape around the end of the month for my fairy gardens. I have them tucked here and there among the other larger flower beds...so we will start planning these focal points.
• Fairy Finds: I will be sharing with you sites of interest or items that I find that are fairy related.
